This famous house of Bahareque is in the center of San Gabriel de Aserrí, is a two-storey corner house with adjoining to public street on its south side and west side, making it ideal for the exhibition of a local business, ideal for the rural tourism that is increasingly more fashionable, San Gabriel de Aserrí currently appears as one of the few villages, with concept of “old colonial town”
A little history...
The house was declared historical and architectural heritage in 1999 and the decree appeared in La Gaceta on 7 January of that year. It was restored in 2005 with an investment by the Center for Research and Conservation of Cultural Heritage of ¢12 million.
By oral tradition it is believed that the house was built in 1901, which would make it 123 years old, but this fact has not been corroborated by the experts so far, although it must be considered that the bahareque and the adobe were banned as elements built after the 1910 Cartago earthquake.
In 2003, when a report on this house was published in UNIVERSIDAD, the architect Ileana Vives had confirmed that this is the only two-story bahareque construction to be registered in Costa Rica.
Actually, the house responds to an eclectic principle, because it combined the basil with the adobe.
